The future is ancestral.

Design from an Afrikan perspective.

We are an independent creative studio designing from an Afrikan perspective. We create brands, typefaces, digital experiences and cultural worlds for people and organisations shaping what comes next.

Culture is our starting point. The future is our playground.

Madimi One letterforms, animated

Featured project — Type

Madimi One

Type has a memory.

Madimi One is a rounded sans-serif typeface commissioned by Google Fonts. Inspired by Afrikan visual languages and cultural forms from Southern Afrika, it explores how cultural references can become part of contemporary typography without becoming trapped in the past.

It is playful. It is expressive. It carries a reference to where it comes from. But it is also made to move.

A typeface rooted in culture and designed for everywhere.

What we do

We make things that have something to say.

  • A logo is only the beginning.
  • A typeface can carry memory.
  • A visual identity can change perception.
  • A garment can tell a scientific story.
  • A writing system can reclaim a language.
  • A website can create a new world.

We design across these possibilities.

Threads of Resilience

When science becomes something you can wear.

What does HIV science look like? Threads of Resilience translates scientific research, data and lived experiences surrounding HIV into a garment.

Research becomes structure. Data becomes pattern. Stories become material.

Design becomes a way of making complex stories visible.

chiShona reimagined, writing-system research

Featured project — Research

chiShona reimagined

What if a language could design itself?

An ongoing exploration into language, writing and cultural identity: how the sounds and structures of chiShona could become the foundation for a contemporary writing system.

Part research. Part typography. Part cultural archaeology. Part speculation.

What happens when we stop designing for African languages and start designing with them?

Thinking

Design is a cultural technology.

  • Currently in the studio

Projects. Experiments. Research. Collaborations. Things that are not quite projects yet — and a new chapter for the studio.

  • Design is a cultural technology

Every design carries something. The space where design stops being decoration and starts becoming a tool for thinking, remembering, communicating and imagining.

  • What if the future looked like us?

We are interested in Afrofuturism beyond the aesthetic. Beyond chrome. Beyond spaceships. The future can be ancestral.
